THE COLLECTION. NEW ACQUISITIONS
Sofia City Art Gallery presents the most recent acquisitions in the collections of Painting, Graphics, Sculpture and Contemporary Art and Photography, which have been received during the recent two years as purchases or donations. Traditionally, since 2008 by such exhibitions, the Museum has been giving an account to its audience, and it has been also showing its policy of completing the collection.
Thanks to the financial support of the Sofia Municipality, in 2007, more than 15 years later, the Gallery made its first purchases of art works. Since then, each year, after a precise selection, works of different character enter the museum. Donations are also an important source for enriching the collection.
So far, filling the collection goes in several directions. One of them is seeking of classical works of Bulgarian art that have been missing or have not been sufficiently presented (Nikola Georgiev, Nikolay Rostovtsev, Georgi Velchev, Pencho Balkanski). The other direction is tracking the development of some artists who have been defined established in Bulgarian art culture and whose adequate exposure requires including works from different periods of their creative development(the sculptors Thomas Kochev and Emil Popov, thegraphic artist Ivan Ninov, the painters Ioan Leviev, Rumen Skorchev, Andrey Daniel, Gredy Assa). A special focus of the selection is the generation of those artists who won recognition after the second half of the 1980s and thus, due to the difficult transitional period, stayed outside the museum collections (Rumen Zhekov, Dolores Dilova, Onnik Karanfiliyan, Vassil Popov). There is a continuing tendency of enriching the stocks with the works of young painters (Nina Ruseva, Alexander Petkov) and graphic artists (Lyubomir Krastev). Interesting emphasis this year are the newly obtained caricatures – an area of artistic expression, which has been much underrated by museums (Alla Georgieva and Chavdar Georgiev, Chavdar Nikolov, Hristo Komarnitski, Stefan Despodov, Rumen Dragostinov, Ivan Kutuzov). Sofia City Art Gallery keeps filling its Contemporary Art and Photography collection either. This collection has no analogue in the Bulgarian museum practice (Vassil Simittchiev, Adelina Popnedeleva, Nedko Solakov, Daniela Kostova, Nina Kovacheva and Valentin Stefanoff, Kalin Serapionov, Boris Missirkov and Georgi Bogdanov, Rada Bukova, etc.).
